Song of the Day: "WEKH (East Kentucky Hallelujah Radio)" by Bishop Allen

When a band does not something out of the ordinary, it is usually for publicity or notoriety, rarely does it benefit the music. That is where Bishop Allen went wrong. The started out on a project that was primarily about the music.
Every month, for an entire year, the released a 4 Song EP, as well as a Live LP for the month of August. It comes to 65 songs in all. Thats 1.25 songs per week. Crazy. None of which sucked. Most of which, were good enough to make their next full length record, one of my favorite albums of all time.
This particular song, is from the November release. It feels more like a story then a song. Like I want to know more about this guy. I love the details, his hands.

When I wrote by best albums of all time list back in 2008, Third Eye Blind's self titled record checked in at number 29, but if I were to rewrite that list today, it is top three possible, top five probable, top ten easy.

So, I left this off my best songs of the year list. It was both by choice and error. I loved the song, but the rest of the album fell flat. This was especially disappointing because I was so looking forward to it. So, although this song kicks, I boycotted it to punish the album. It's stupid and brash, but, I make my mind up.

But, it is still good enough to post as a song of the day. Now if the rest of that album sounded like this tune, it could have been something special.

If you would have asked me what I needed to hear tonight, I would have scratched my head and fallen back on old standards like Bishop Allen or Third Eye Blind, or I possibly would have tossed out new favorites like The Head and the Heart or The Tallest Man on Earth. But I would have just been taking stabs in the dark, because I did not know what I needed to hear, until I found this track. Instant love. Listen. Love. Pass on.

You may remember this duo, as they were our band of the week back in November. And, clearly, big things are on their horizon for 2011.

I was cycling through my best albums of the decade list today while at work, and nothing sounds like something I needed to hear. You know the feeling. That point where a song can either make or break your day, but, the silence is worse. So, I was at that point where it all seemed like white noise, and my day was getting shitter and shitter, then it all clicked. My favorite all time whiny angry song cycled through and all was right with the world. I played it again on the drive home, sang it all out, and was free. Now I share.

So, I posted this song at number 39 of my songs of 2010. But, upon several listens today, I am very very tempted to rescript the entire list to push this into the top ten. But rather than do all that work, I'll just give it its own song of the day posting. The lazy way out.

This song is from the Terrible Thrills Vol. 1 release from Steel Train. It is a rerelease of their self titled record, but with all the songs gorgeously covered by some of the strongest women in the game. This track easily steals the show. It is so unrelentingly impactful with soft power. I want to curl up and live inside the notes.

Year In Music: Best 50 Songs of 2010

So, my crazy knows no bounds. This year, I have a best songs list that totals 50 tunes. And it was hard to narrow it down to that. But I did my best.
How I made the list.... As the year went on, when I was cycling through my 2010 songs, if I found one I liked, I gave it five stars. Then I set up my iPod to automatically sort all '10 releases with high marks. When all was said and down, I had exactly 175 songs that had earned that rating. I realize that sounds like a lot, but its not like I am a song slut. You have to keep in mind that I purchased 163 albums/EP's this year. All in all, that totals 1352 total songs. That gives favorable marks on just over 12% of songs. So, yeah, I am actually pickier than it seems. Anyways.... Here are the songs.
