Shit I Like, Vol. 1

>> Saturday, September 1, 2012

This is where I am going to share my varied opinions on shit I like.

Shit I like #1: John Green
I read a lot, (54 books so far this year) and lately, one author has really stood out to me. John Green. If you have not read "Looking For Alaska" or "The Fault In Our Stars" read them now, but bring tissues. LFA moved quickly into my top 3 books of all time, and that is a hard bunch to get into, and TFIOS has cemented itself into my top 20, but is growing on me more and more as I look back on it. I don't know if you use Goodreads, you should you know, but for any author to have 1 book with a 4-star or higher rating is very rare, John Green has 4.

Miles Halter is fascinated by famous last words and tired of his safe life at home. He leaves for boarding school to seek what the dying poet Francois Rabelais called the "Great Perhaps." Much awaits Miles at Culver Creek, including Alaska Young. Clever, funny, screwed-up, and dead sexy, Alaska will pull Miles into her labyrinth and catapult him into the Great Perhaps.
Looking for Alaska brilliantly chronicles the indelible impact one life can have on another. A stunning debut, it marks John Green's arrival as an important new voice in contemporary fiction
Diagnosed with Stage IV thyroid cancer at 13, Hazel was prepared to die until, at 14, a medical miracle shrunk the tumours in her lungs... for now.
Two years post-miracle, sixteen-year-old Hazel is post-everything else, too; post-high school, post-friends and post-normalcy. And even though she could live for a long time (whatever that means), Hazel lives tethered to an oxygen tank, the tumours tenuously kept at bay with a constant chemical assault.
Enter Augustus Waters. A match made at cancer kid support group, Augustus is gorgeous, in remission, and shockingly to her, interested in Hazel. Being with Augustus is both an unexpected destination and a long-needed journey, pushing Hazel to re-examine how sickness and health, life and death, will define her and the legacy that everyone leaves behind.

Shit I like #2: Hit and Run

Ok, from this trailer, you're probably like "what the hell Addi?!" and rightfully so. The trailer does the movie no justice. I went and saw this last night as a, lets-just-go-and-see-whats-playing kinda thing, and walked out thoroughly impressed. The car scenes, rad. The action scenes, rad. The comedy, pretty rad. And the chemistry between Dax and Kristen, super rad and believable. Also, I love her.

Shit I like #3: The 90's

Right now, for whatever stupid reason, I am stuck on the nineties. I keep going back in my iPod and pulling out 3eb, the eels, live, the refreshments, tonic and new radicals. I know, random assortment of bands. I also keep wanting to wear my flannel shirts and listed to 107.7 the end. Something is wrong, but also so right.

Song of the Day: "Mother We Just Can't Get Enough" by New Radicals

>> Friday, August 31, 2012

So, I'm back, and I'm serious this time. It took me forever to find the right song to state how it feels to rejoin the blogging world, so I just decided to say fuck it and go with a song with my favorite opening line of all time. "Make my nipples hard. Let's go!"

"Mother We Just Can't Get Enough" by New Radicals

As a special little inside glimpse of Addi, know that this track is taken from my second favorite album of all time. Now you know.

30 Day Song Challenge: Day 1: Your Favorite Song(s)

>> Thursday, July 12, 2012

So, on my personal Facebook account, I have just started the 30 Day Song Challenge, and I thought it would be fun to share the daily activities here as well. Not to mention a cheap and easy way to do songs of the day.
So, Day 1 is Your favorite song. Knowing me, I could not pick one. At first, I couldn't pick 4, but, after lots of thinking and hemming and hawing, I got it down to two songs and called it good.

And away we go....

Day 1. Song 1A.
"Need Your Love So Bad" by Little Willie John

Day 1. Song 1B
"Creep" (Acoustic) by Radiohead

Song of the Day: "The Freshman" by The Verve Pipe

>> Saturday, February 4, 2012

I know most of the SOTD's spotlight new or unknown stuff. But most isn't always. And every nowandthen there is a song that has a cross generational reach. I think this is one of those songs. This song defined my 15th year. And I think that if a kid heard this today, it could have that same impact on them. And 15 years from now, another kid....

Best of 2011: Rediscoveries

>> Monday, December 5, 2011

I spend so much time finding what's next I often forget about what was. It is the biggest complaint I get about the music I share. And, although, I often ignore that complaint. It doesn't mean that I ignore all the music that came before. This list is a quick little jog down memory lane. These are albums, or reincarnations of albums (you'll see) from years past that I have rediscovered in 2011. I hope you enjoy.

Counting Crows - Across A Wire: Live in NYC
Best live album of all time.

"Have You Seen Me Lately" by Counting Crows (VH1 Storytellers)

Counting Crows - August and Everything After (kinda).
I have never really forgotten about Counting Crows. August and Everything After is my favorite album of alltime. But the Counting Crows released "Live at Town Hall" album and DVD. This a live concert where the only songs they play, beginning to end are from August and Everything After. In Order. Best. Idea. Ever. Totally gives the classic record a new life.

"Rain King" by Counting Crows (Live at Town Hall)

The Eels - Beautiful Freak
This record defined 1996 for me.

"My Beloved Monster" by The Eels

Tonic - Lemon Parade
Damn. 1996 was a hell of a year for music. Like seriously. If I were to rank years (idea!) this one would be damn close to the top.

"Soldier's Daughter" by Tonic

"Travis" - The Man Who
This is who Coldplay stole their sound from. That's just science.

"As You Are" by Travis

Third Eye Blind - Third Eye Blind
This, like the Counting Crows album, is not one I ever forgot about. But, I have not listened to it nearly enough in the recent years. One of the most complete records, start to especially strong finish.

"God Of Wine" by Third Eye Blind

Wood - Songs From Stamford Hill
This is probably the best album you have never heard of. Far and away the best no hit wonder ever. Created, released an astoundingly good record and disbanded in record time, this outfit never got its due. But, it has been one of my favorite albums for 12 years now.

"Could I Be" by Wood

Song of the Day: "Jeremy" by Pearl Jam

>> Tuesday, November 1, 2011

I know I generally champion new or unknown music for my song of the day. But today, I shove generally up my ass. This song, this video, change the young teenage me in ways I am only still discovering.

"Jeremy" by Pearl Jam

Song/DVD of the Day: "Round Here" by Counting Crows

>> Tuesday, August 16, 2011

August and Everything After is, hands down, the best album of my life. Easily. Far and away. Which is why I am going to do something I swore never to do. I am going to buy a live concert DVD.  I feel like live in concert DVD's cheapen the experience of seeing the band live. And I know that is a noble concept that has zero merit, but I have always held firm to this belief. But, now, I am going to have to break that rule.

The Counting Crows are releasing at the end of the month, (end of August no less), a live DVD of them playing the ENTIRE August and Everything After record, in order. It is the record, live and in concert. Nothing else. And it seems like the best idea I have ever heard.

Here is a snippet.

Song of the Day: "Blue Flashing Light (Hidden Track)" by Travis

>> Sunday, July 10, 2011

So, I know that I have a tendency to focus on the new and forget about the old, but, that is not always true. Now, this 1999 album is not exactly an "oldie" but, it falls into that category for me. At least it's not from this year.

One of my favorite songs of all time, this Hidden Track off the end of the song "Slide Show" from the album The Man Who is a riot of a song. The anger and passion spitted is on another level. I am sure you will love it.

"Blue Flashing Light (Hidden Track)" by Travis

Song of the Day: "Sex and Candy" by Marcy Playground

>> Thursday, March 31, 2011

I miss the 90's. I miss music videos that make no sense. I miss lyrics that have "mmhmmm" in them.

"Sex and Candy" by Marcy Playground

Song of the Day: "Bulls On Parade" by Rage Against The Machine

>> Monday, March 7, 2011

So, continuing on theme week kick, I give you another band that had a fantastic burnout. Now Rage did not have a slow burn, like Oasis did, they seemingly imploded. Zach de la Rocha, the famed frontman, and of my favorite rock voices (list idea) suddenly quit the band when he felt like the rest of the group was not taking life/music seriously enough.

"Bulls On Parade" by Rage Against The Machine.

Song of the Day: "Wonderwall" by Oasis

>> Sunday, March 6, 2011

Every band has an end. Most bands just fade into obscurity, and just because the soundtracks to our memories, but some bands go out with a bang. This week every song of the day is going to be dedicated to my favorite bands that had outlandish/strange/out-no-where endings, because, it's more fun this way.

Ok, so "Oasis" is still technically making music, but from the time the below song was released, until today, they have like 4 different members, including replacing one of the Gallagher brothers, and now going under the moniker Beady Eye.

"Wonderwall" by Oasis

Song of the Day: "Where Did You Sleep Last Night (Unplugged)" by Nirvana

>> Tuesday, February 15, 2011

I have not done a song of the day in a bit, and I apologize. Just could not find any songs that sung out. But, that changed today.
Enjoy.

"Where Did You Sleep Last Night (Unplugged)" by Nirvana

Song of the Day: "Breakfast at Tiffany's" by Deep Blue Something

>> Tuesday, January 25, 2011

Just to make you feel good and sing along. Do it! Sing! SING DAMMIT SING!!!

Thanks for indulging. You may now return to your regular scheduled life.

"Breakfast at Tiffany's" by Deep Blue Something

Song of the Day: "God Of Wine" by Third Eye Blind

>> Tuesday, January 18, 2011

The longer I let this album age, the better and better it gets, much like a glass of wine. When I wrote by best albums of all time list back in 2008, Third Eye Blind's self titled record checked in at number 29, but if I were to rewrite that list today, it is top three possible, top five probable, top ten easy.

"God Of Wine" by Third Eye Blind

Song of the Day: "Today" by The Smashing Pumpkins

>> Thursday, January 6, 2011

My iPod just found this song. I forgot how great it is. It's right.

"Today" by The Smashing Pumpkins

Song of the Day: "Ready Or Not" by The Fugees

>> Tuesday, November 23, 2010

Because I needed to hear this song. So, this song of the day is mine. Find your own.

"Ready Or Not" by The Fugees

Song of the Day: "Colorblind" by Counting Crows

>> Wednesday, November 10, 2010

Sometimes I need to hear a song. It's like an urge or driving force. But the strange thing is, I rarely know what song I need to hear. I know it sounds crazy, and it goes even further than this, but I am not going to share all my crazies on the interweb. Anyways, tonight was one of those nights, and I just found what I needed. Enjoy

For a student made music video, its not awful.

"Colorblind" by Counting Crows

Songs of the Day: "Leech" & "Open Road Song" by EVE 6

>> Wednesday, November 3, 2010

I forgot how much I loved this album. Outside of the radio hits, it was just a quality album from start to finish. Here are two of the deeper cuts for you to enjoy. The second is my favorite track from the album.

"Leech" by EVE 6

"Open Road Song" by EVE 6
