Top Ten Rain Songs: Dueling Lists by Stevie & Addi

>> Monday, June 15, 2009

Have you seen that movie Bedtime Stories? Okay, you don't have to admit it but in that movie Adam Sandlers niece and nephew make things happen just by adding them in to his ridiculous stories- like making it rain gumballs. Well, it's not raining gumballs but ironically it is pouring outside as I type up the first of what is sure to be more dueling lists.

Our first challenge? Best songs with Rain in the title. Take a gander at our dueling lists...

Addi:

1. Covered In Rain – John Mayer
There is no doubt that this will forever be my # 1 song about rain. Considering it is the only song with the word rain in it on my top songs of all time list, which you can also find on this blog. But more so than that, this song edges closer on perfection than most songs even attempt.

2. Raining In Baltimore – Counting Crows
I think logically speaking, most people would place Rain King ahead of this in the pantheon of Counting Crows songs about rain, I mean, that one was a hit single and this one just stayed hidden from radio play for years, but screw logic.

3. Why Does It Always Rain On Me – Travis
An amazing album about not fitting in your own skin. About not filling the shoes of those who tread the path before you. And this song completes that album.

4. Fire And Rain – James Taylor
My mom taught me to love James Taylor.

5. Wish It Would Rain – The Temptations
My dad taught me to love The Temptations.

6. Rain King – Counting Crows
First of all, its hard enough to have two songs by one band on a single list, it makes you feel lazy, like you didn’t work hard enough to be more diverse, but there is no denying either one of these.

7. Only Happy When It Rains – Garbage
I almost left this one off, not by choice, but by error of omission. And for that I apologize to my one reader.

8. No Rain – Blind Melon
This is a duh pick.

9, Rain – Bishop Allen
Ok, so this is my shout out to my current favorite band.

10. My Old Raincoat – E (of The Eels)
This is me cheating. I was challenged to write a list about songs with the word rain in the title, and was given very clear instructions that words like rainbow were not allowed, because, they were not about rain. A brilliant break up song, on a superb album you have and will never listen too.

Honorable Mentions
Have You Seen The Rain – CCR
Still Rainin’ – Johnny Lang

Stevie:

10. Have You Ever Seen the Rain by CCR – a classic, also my grandma’s favorite band while I was growing up so I think CCR will always hold a special place in my heart.

9. Candy Rain by Soul for Real - this song brings me right back to 8th grade.

8. I’m Only Happy When It Rains by Garbage- Who rocks more than Shirley Manson, she was an icon in the 90’s.

7. Why Does it Always Rain on Me by Travis – I go back and forth with Travis but I like this song a lot.

6. Rain by Bishop Allen – Beautiful.

5. Rain King by Counting Crows – I’ve listened to this song more than any other song on this list. I was going to go with Raining in Baltimore but I have special memories of listening to this song live.

4. November Rain by Guns N Roses – Is there anything more rad than a rock n roll wedding or Slash's guitar solo?

3. Flood (New Rain) by Jars of Clay - Biblical but bad ass.

2. Fire and Rain by James Taylor - James Taylor just has a way of singing a tune. Addi introduced him to me.

1. No Rain by Blind Melon - One of my favorite all time songs and happens to have rain in the title + the little bee girl!

A follow up to my blog on Best Kiss, here's a short shout-out to a category gone by the way side- Best Song. This category only lasted for 8 years and ended in the 90's but I think you'll remember each of these songs...

7. "I Will Always Love You" performed by Whitney Houston (pre-drug problem) in The Bodyguard.
6. "Everything I Do" performed by Bryan Adams in Robin Hood Men in Tights
5. "Will You Be There" performed by Michael Jackson in Free Willy
4. "Sittin Up in My Room" performed by Brandy in Waiting to Exhale
3. "I Don't Want to Miss A Thing" performed by Aerosmith in Armaggedon

1. "Big Empty" performed by the Stone Temple Pilots in The Crow

I know one if not all of these songs brought you way back...

MTV Movie Awards: Best Kiss

>> Saturday, May 16, 2009

MTV is coming up on it’s annual Movie Awards Show on May 31st. Throughout the years talented, and not so talented young stars have been nominated for such important categories as Best Male Performance, Best On-Screen Team, and Breakthrough Performance. In honor of this momentous occasion I will look back at the winners of a different, clearly more important, category: Best Kiss.
I rated them in order of least deserving to most deserving based on this criteria: my own personal opinion, my own bias, and my own agenda.

17. Briana Evigan and Robert Hoffman (2008) in Step Up 2 The Streets… because Who Cares!
16. Vivica A. Fox and Will Smith (1997) in Independence Day… because I watched it last week and I don’t even remember an exciting kiss so clearly it wasn’t that great.
15. Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson (1994) in Indecent Proposal… Demi looks way hotter now than she did then.
14. Gwyneth Paltrow and Ralph Fiennes (1999) in Shakespeare in Love… did anyone actually see this movie?
13. Natasha Henstridge and Matthew Ashford (1996) in Species: The Awakening… it got this far because it’s a Species movie.
12. Julia Stiles and Sean Patrick (2001) in Save the Last Dance… I actually like this movie, own the soundtrack but really?
11. Christian Slater and Marisa Tomei (1993) in Untamed Heart… this was a great kiss. But it was still with Christian Slater.
10. Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst (2003) in Spiderman…the infamous upside kiss- still they both bug me so it wasn’t that great.
9. Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen (2007) in Talladega Nights… meh, okay, funny but not really memorable.
8. Owen Wilson, Amy Smart and Carmen Elektra (2004) in Starsky and Hutch… it’s a three way kiss, it has to be in top 10.
7. Anna Chlumsky and Macauly Culkin (1992) in My Girl… classic.
6. Lauren Holly and Jim Carrey (1995) in Dumb and Dumber… classic, but in a different way.
5. Jason Biggs and Sean William Scott (2002) in American Pie 2… they probably liked it.
4. Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair (2000) in Cruel Intentions… they probably like it too.
3. Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore (1998) in The Wedding Singer… of course part of me still wants to make this number one.
2. Jake Gyllenhal and Heath Ledger (2006) in Brokeback Mountain… that was an amazing kiss.
And the number one best kiss of the MTV nominated kisses is…
1. Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling (2005) in The Notebook… hot. Seriously. Hot.

Bakers Dozen x2: Best Cover Songs

>> Sunday, March 15, 2009

Wow, it is funny how more motivated I am to blog when I am actually busy and strapped for time. Now that I am between jobs, and full of free time, I have been literally staring at the screen scratching my head, forgetting how to do the keyboard tango, and struggling to draw words together to express the list idea I have ingrained into the inside of my eyelids. But, I will push through, for my avid reader.

This is a list of my favorite Cover songs of all time. There are a couple type of songs I am going to try and avoid. I do not want to use a song if I became bigger or more recognizable than the original. So, no "All Along The Watchtower" or "With a Little Help From My Friends" and so on. However, a couple times, I have blatantly ignored this rule for my own gain. I will try to include some thoughts on songs 1-13 for sure and sporadically for songs 14-26. I will include links for all songs (click on title of song) or videos where applicable.

1. Hallelujah – Jeff Buckley (Leonard Cohen)
This is one of the rule breakers. One of the best songs ever recorded, and very high up on my top song of all time, which you can find by clicking on one of the labels to the left.

2. Romeo & Juliet – Matt Nathanson (Dire Straits)
So, the Youtube clip I attached is nothing special to watch, but is something special to listen too. I chose it intentionally, it is the exact version that I fell in love with. Great song. Check it.

3. Tracks Of My Tears – Mary Beth (Smokey Robinson & The Miracles)
To hear this beautiful song you will need to click the link and hit the play button in the top right hand corner. But, anyways, on to the song. This song holds a special place for me. And my blog co-writer can attest, this was one of my first endeavors into the world of film, as she starred in my music video to this song for my brief stay in film school. It is a simple, beautiful song by a woman who never gained any of the attention I expected her too. And, she will make another appearance shortly.

4. Hit Me Baby One More Time – Travis (Britney Spears)
This was one of the Napster gems that swept the world almost by fluke. It shows you how well crafted of a song Britney was working with. This could honestly be their song, and a hit, had they released it first.

5. Wild Horses – Jewel (The Rolling Stones)
There are some reports out there that this is not Jewel. There is no doubt in my mind that it is. I know her speaking voice very well, and I had such a huge crush on her and her snaggle tooth that I have her singing voice forever in my psyche. Listen and judge for yourself.

6. Where Did You Sleep Last Night – Nirvana (Leadbelly)
This is kinda a shitty version of the famous "Unplugged" session, however, it is undeniable, this is an amazing song. Again, this kind of breaks the better know than the original rule, but screw you for calling me out on it.

7. Hey Ya – Matt Weddle of Obadiah Parker (Outcast)

One of the most creative covers I have come across. Again, it speaks volume of the song writer(s) because this song is just as strong in this incarnation.

8. Get The Party Started – Lisa Hannigan & Damien Rice (Pink)
This is along the same lines as the Outcast cover from above. Brilliant. Subtle.

9. Wonderwall – Ryan Adams (Oasis)
Take a song that iconically belongs to a band, rework it, slow it down, sadden it up, and make it better. That is both the risk and achievement that Ryan Adams stumbled into with this piece of magic.

10. Daydream Believer – Mary Beth (The Monkees)
Again, for whatever reason, youtube does not have Mary Beth vids, so, hit play in the top right corner. Easily one of the most drastic reworkings of a song on this list. This upbeat, party song by The Monkees is now completely melancholy. If there is any track on this list you should listen too, it is this one.

11. Across The Universe – Fiona Apple (The Beatles)

I had to include the music video for this song. It is one of the lesser known Beatles songs, however, it became one of my favorites because of this Fiona version. Made for "The Pleasantville" Soundtrack, this video is beautiful.

12. (tie) Crazy – Ray LaMontagne (Gnarls Barkley)
Another example of great song writing.

12. (tie) To Love Somebody - Damien Rice & Ray Lamontagne (The Bee Gees)

Ok, so with this tie, there is actually 27 songs, but, honestly, this song could be as high as number 5. I forgot about it until I was almost ready to hit "Publish Post." This song has been featured as a video on my myspace for over a year, and it slipped my mind. I am an idiot.

13. Cry Me A River – Glen Hansard (Justin Timberlake)
This is another song that I could not find a good version of on youtube, so you will have to find and hit play. But I encourage you to do so. Glen will show up on here again, keep an eye out.

14. Mad World – Gary Jules (Tears For Fears)

Ok, so I know I said I would limit most of my commentary to the top 13 songs, but this video is AMAZING. Never saw it before today.

15. Smells Like Teen Spirit – Tori Amos (Nirvana)

16. Time After Time – Matchbox 20 (Cyndi Lauper)
This was another product of the Napster generation. Great version of this song.

17. I Will Survive – Cake (Gloria Gaynor)

18. Home – Kelly Clarkson (Marc Broussard)
One of my favorite songs of all time by Marc Broussard, and Kelly can sing it very respectably.

19. Since U Been Gone – Ted Leo (Kelly Clarkson)

20. Everytime – Glen Hansard & Colm MacIomarie (Britney Spears)
Britney makes another appearance on this list along with Glen's second of three visits. I hated this song when it came out. Glen makes it something else. I discovered this gem on a series called "Even Better Than The Real Thing Vol. I & II." It is also where I stumbled across the Lisa Hannigian's cover of Pink, Glen's Cover of JT, and Paddy Casey's Cover of Blackstreet (coming up). If you like covers, it is a great place to find some unusual ones.

21. Into The Mystic – Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova (Van Morrison)

Very close to the original version, but still very good. And I have to include it, just because I love this duo.

22. Leaving On A Jet Plane - Chantal Kreviazuk's (John Denver)

23.
No Diggity – Paddy Casey (Blackstreet)
You will have to move forward to the 2:10 mark on the video to hear the actual cover, long lead in called Grandma's hands. But this is a good, funky, 70's like, gospel inspired version of this one hit wonder from the 90's. Check it out.

24. Sea Of Love – Cat Power (Phil Phillips [and many many others])

25. Last Kiss – Pearl Jam (Wayne Cochran & the C.C. Riders)

26. Free Fallin - John Mayer (Tom Petty)

Sorry for the absence!

Things have been the opposite of hectic, but I still have not found the words to write.

I am working on several lists. The closest to publication is Greatest Cover Songs of all time. My list currently stands at 28, and I need to add at least 2 and as many as 22 before I am satisfied and willing to share it. Suggestions welcome in the comments area.

I have been distracted with my job hunt, the snow fall, and stomach flu. But that is not an excuse, just an excuse. I will be more diligent to my 7 faithful readers and post very soon.

Any list ideas would be gladly welcomed.
