Song of the Day: "Anywhere" by 112

>> Monday, May 31, 2010

So sorry for the lack of posts this weekend, in the process of moving.
So, what happened to the R&B "group?" I mean, in the late 90's they were everywhere, and now, from what I can tell, its all about the solo.

Just cause....

Band of the Week: The Rural Alberta Advantage

>> Friday, May 28, 2010

I feel like this is a band that might divide some of my real music fan friends. I mean, the first run through of the record, I LOVED it like they invented indie rock. The second run through, I couldn't remember why I LOVED it at all. But the third listen, I fell into a mutual admiration comfortability relationship with it that I am completely satisfied with. Is it a "great" voice? No, but he sings with feeling and emotion, like whining in key, and I do not at all mean that as a slight. And its not what they do with their instruments that is impressive, its their refrain that shows strength and confidence in their sound. They let the quite be important. The missing bass guitar be an advantage rather than a detriment. It's quite something.... Listen to the first song below all the way through to really understand what I mean.

Introducing the band of the week....
The Rural Alberta Advantage
Anyways, I hope you enjoy, but if you don't, that's cool too. Not all music is for everybody.

"The Ballad of the RAA" (This is my favorite track on the record, and as is almost always the case, that means there is not a good video for the song)

"Drain The Blood" (Great song with a very cool little video)

"Edmonton" (this is a great studio session for a fantastic little track)

"In The Summer Time" (This song is growing on me, the video is just alright)

Song of the Day: Whitley "More Than Life"

Perhaps my new favorite song from an artist I've never heard of but immediately went and added to my rhapsody. I have a feeling this will be my new obsession.

Song of the Day: "Beach House" by The Cave Singers

>> Wednesday, May 26, 2010

This video sucks, I mean, its nothing bad really, its a pretty image, kinda, but its not a "music video" its just a video some guy made that uses the song that I have fallen in love with.

So, watch, if starring at a solitary image is your thing, but I would just recommend closing your eyes and letting this AMAZING song from this little seattle band swallow you up whole.

This may be one of my favorite songs of 2010. Keep an eye out.

It just fits today's mood. And really, I think they get a bad rap nostalgically. Let's fix that. Dance.

Band of the Week: Nico Stai

>> Saturday, May 22, 2010

With my two posts earlier this week about my random music venture success stories in mind, I would like to share with you my favorite out of all these discoveries. Keep in mind, that I have mentioned 3 artists that have worked out, but, I could name about 200 that have not. This is a rarity.
I'm happy to introduce you to..... Nico Stai
I do not really like to share this guy. He is one of my secrets. But I was recently reading an interview he gave, and it made me realize, that, he will not get discovered without fans spreading his name. He is so feircly independent that he would rather put out his own records and sell maybe 600 copies, than have a label release it to sell a million (which he is fully capable of doing). As part of a band, before he went solo, he saw what a label can do to the creative process. And he has been working on his own thing since.

Seriously, if you like good singer songwriter shit that really gets under your skin and grows with you, on you and around you, this is your guy. Buy everything he does. Seriously.

I am including 4 videos. Three are from the same session that was shot for SxSW, and one is just a crappy slide show. I generally do not like to include those slide show ones, but it is my favorite song of his, and the only usable thing I can find.

"Maybe Maybe" One of my all time favorite songs.

"The Skies Over Your Head" Great track from a great, Great, GREAT album.

"Miss Friday" another great song, from my favorite of his releases.

"3000 Dollar Girl" this is a new song I found while doing this blog. Makes me excited for what could be upcoming....

Song of the Day: Broken Bells "The High Road"

>> Friday, May 21, 2010

Simply because I can't get this song out of my head today and because this song has totally grown on me. I admit I hated it the first time I heard it- with that like 80's melodic Casio keyboard (not that there's anything wrong with that) in the background kept throwing me. I think it took a while but I get it now and sometimes it takes a while for a song to seep into your skin. This ones here to stay.

My Up and Coming Music List. Updated.

>> Thursday, May 20, 2010

Inspired by Stevie's Up And Coming Book List, I am going to start the same thing with my music purchased for the year. My favorite blog to write is my year end music review. And it be honest, I start it in January of each year. I start collecting music as soon as possible, and use a smart playlist to amass them all in one place for easy listening and examining. As we stand on 5/21, I have purchased 52 albums from 2010 (including records released after 10/1/2009 to today. How am I expected to judge an album in less than three months? It's impossible. So the last 3 months are tagged on to the next year.) That is 14 more records added to this list since 4/24. Thats less than a month. This is an issue that may actually be a compulsion. This is depressing. Anyways....

Below you will see a quick list of the albums I have picked up so far this year. I will try to update them every month or so. If I have an opinion of the record, will post a quick note, but keep in mind, I may change mine.

Original Post was on 4/24. I have since wasted even more money.

New Albums are in GREEN, with my new and updated thoughts of previously posted albums in BLUE.

Adam Green (from The Moldy Peaches) - "Minor Love" Pretty good, like Mike Doughty lite. I think if he took himself more seriously, so would I.

The Album Leaf - "A Chorus of Storytellers" Falling From the Sun is a hell of a song, have not absorbed the rest of the record yet.

Band Of Horses – “Infinite Arms” Too new to judge.

Beach House - "Teen Dream" Borderline and fading.

Bear In Heaven – “Beast Rest Forth Mouth” Too new to judge.

The Big Pink – “A Brief History Of Love” Too new to judge.

the bird and the bee – “Interpreting the Masters Volume 1: A Tribute to Daryl Hall and John Oates” This should NOT work. But it does, and it has a REAL chance to grow on me enough to make my list. If I ever make an ironic music list, this will be a shoo-in.

Broken Bells - "Broken Bells" Recommended by Stevie's Mister, so far it’s a good pick up, need to cycle through a few more times.

Broken Social Scene – “Forgiveness Rock Record” Too new to judge, but early reports are strong.

Bryan Scary & the Shredding Tears - "Mad Valentine" Don't like.

Colonies – “Thirty Thousand” Too new to judge.

Dum Dum Girls - "I Will Be" Too new to judge. Couple GREAT tracks, but a few tracks do not make a record.

The Dutchess & The Duke - "Sunset/Sunrise" Slipping from very good to…eh.

Fang Island - "Fang Island" Why the hype. Nothing special so far.

First Aid Kit - "The Big Black and The Blue" AMAZING. I LOVE THIS RECORD. I have since purchased the whole catalog and will be seeing them on 6/5.

Frightened Rabbit - "The Winter of Mixed Drinks" Surefire. Very Very Good.

fun. “fun. Presents Selected Selections From Their First Full-length Album, Heretofore Known as, 'Aim and Ignite', Performed Acoustically Live At Fingerprints” Very Very good

Girls - "Album" Released last week of Sept. in 2009. This is the record I regret the most leaving off last years list. It is a hell of a record, and I am bending my Oct. rule to get it the attention it deserves.

Horse Feathers – “Thistled Spring” Very relaxed record. Great to just shut your eyes too.

Janelle Monae – “The ArchAndroid” Too new to judge. Like, I just got this 30 mins ago.

Jason Castro - "Jason Castro" Former American Idol singersongwriter needs to continue to grow. Not a bad release, but a little immature.

Jeff Jacobson - "Lunch in the Park" This should be forgettable, its run of the mill singersongwriter stuff, but I never change the song when shuffle stumbles onto this. I think I like it.

The Joy Formidable – “A Balloon Called Moaning” Interesting, but unsure of where it fits in.

Julian Casablancas - "Phrazes For The Young" Interesting, but unsure.

Justin Nozuka - "You I Wind Land And Sea" If I was in an unhealthy place in my life. If I was heavily depressed or sedated, I would LOVE this record. But I think I am too content for it. It is good, but very depressing.

Little & Ashley - "Stole My Heart EP" This is the music behind those adorable amazon kindle commercials. Very cute indie pop.

Local Natives - "Gorilla Manor" Surefire.

Los Campesinos! - "Romance is Boring" This was my most anticipated release of the year, but the band has lost something for me. Do not get me wrong, this is a good recording, with some great individual songs. But this is not a great record. Not like their first two. Not sure if it will make my list, which is shocking to me.

The Magnetic Fields - "Realism" My least favorite of the year so far.

Mia Carruthers and The Retro's - "We Will Grow EP" Too new to judge.

Matt Pond PA – “The Dark Leaves” Good, but kinda forgettable.

The Middle East - "The Recordings of the Middle East EP" Nice so far but, too new to judge.

Mike Doughty - "Sad Man Happy Man" Little disappointing, except for the bonus tracks and covers.

Mimicking Birds - "Mimicking Birds" Top five as of today. Great, GREAT, album.

The Morning Benders - "Big Echo" Pretty good. Need more spins.

Mumford & Sons – “Sigh No More” Surefire. Great record.

Murs & 9th Wonder – “Fornever” Too new to judge. Still have not found that great hip-hop album of 2010.

The National – “High Violet” Too new to judge.

Nick Jaina - "A Bird In The Opera House" This is really growing on me.

One-Eyed Mule – “Drifting to a Happy Place” So far, so good. Very Excited to see where this record takes me.

Peirson Ross – “Reverse & Ready – Side B – EP” Great to shut your eyes to and just fade into.

Portugal. The Man - "American Ghetto" Very good record with great potential. Surefire.

Sad Brad Smith - "Love Is Not What You Need" SOLID

She & Him - "Volume Two" Borderline, but probable.

Sleepy Sun – “Fever” & “Open Eyes EP” Too new to judge.

South China - "Washingtons" Unimpressed for the most part. Almost always hit “next”
Surfer Blood - "Astro Coast"
Purchased today. I texted KGB and asked, "What is the best album of the year so far?" and Surfer Blood was what they told me, so I buy. Just alright. Damn KGB.

The Tallest Man On Earth - "The Wild Hunt" Surefire. Top three possible, top five probable.

Titus Andronicus - "The Monitor" When I heard indie rock themed around the Civil War I thought I could be very interesting. And it is interesting, just not very good.

Toro Y Moi - "Causers Of This" Don’t really like.

Trent Dabbs - "Your Side Now" Very solid singersongwriter stuff. Might really grow on me. Hasn’t so far.

Vampire Weekend - "Contra" When I first picked this up, I thought it was too much the same. But now that I have run it through more than a few times, I am starting to love it.

Wakey!Wakey! - "Almost Everything I Wish I'd Said The Last Time I Saw You...." The best record of the year so far. It's overtly poppy, but in an unobnoxious way. It is really wonderful. Songs like Car Crash and Dance So Good will surely be near the top of my best songs list.

Wale - "Attention Deficit" Very good. So far, the best hip-hop of ‘10

Yeasayer - "Odd Blood" Strange fucking record that I am really really liking.

Sweetheart 2010 - Various Artists. Quality all the way through. Likes of Hey Marseilles, Spoon and Jose Gonzalez.

Songs of the Day: "Take a Message" "The Way I Feel" & "Rocksteady" by Remy Shand

***Updated 10/5/11 with videos that work***

With yesterdays blog in mind, I have scoured my music collection to find an artist that I know you missed out on. I will give you a dollar if you can show me you own this record. Unless your a Canadian Soul lover from the early 00's.
Today's random music venture success story is..... Remy Shand.
Talent gets my attention, always. In the early 00's I was on a serious R&B and Hip Hop kick. I thought Dru Hill and St. Lunatics (who have a new record out soon) kicked major ass, if you can believe that. Anyways, I was always trying to find something that sounded really sexy playing really loud in my car. And thats why I picked up this record. The Loud Sexy Effect.

I was watching very very late night tv one night, watching the channel Much Music, which is the Canadian equivilant of MTV, and saw this music video that showed one guy playing and singing all the parts. Drums, bass, keys, vocals (lead and follow) and everything in between. Now, I thought they were just being clever, but felt compelled to check this guy out anyways. Turns out, they were not being clever at all. Remy Shand is a musican that LITERALLY played every single note, sang every pitch perfect line on the entire record! The video was crap, but the song stuck with me. So, I picked it up, to see if it sucked as a whole. And..... obivoulsy it didn't, or else I wouldn't be writing this, that would be a fucked up blog....

Now, the most interesting thing about Remy is the fact that he has vanished off the face of the earth. He released this record, it was a huge success in Canada and a moderate one in the USA, even garnering 4 Grammy Noms, 6 Juno (canada's version) Nom's with 1 Win for best R&B/Soul Recording of the Year for the album The Way I Feel, and was never seen from again. Seriously, google "What Happened to Remy Shand" and you will be shocked by the amount of sites that pop up looking for him. In this day and age, how does someone just disappear?!? There has not been a sighting, a press release, a leaked song, or anything, he is just gone.

I have included 3 videos, because, I could not pick one. The album is truly well crafted and a great addition to any soul music lover.

Songs of the Day: "Where You Don't Belong" & "I Miss Hanging With You" by One-Eyed Mule

>> Wednesday, May 19, 2010

So, there are some bands that I completely love that NO ONE knows about. You know, every now and then, I'll buy a record based on the name of a band, creative cover art, clever song titles, and whatnot. And 98.2% of the time, it is truly a waste of money. But for these next few days, I will share with you a few of the success stories in my random music ventures.
Today, that band is One-Eyed Mule.
As you can tell, I did not pick up this band based on the name, I mean, honestly, that name kinda sucks, and it doesn't suit them at all. But, who am I to judge. Maybe, I'm wrong. Maybe in Denmark it does suit them. It could be an idiom for very large penis in Danish for all I know. But I digress.

Anyways, I found this band like 2 years ago while watching the travel channel. Some random show with a scene at a bar that had a band playing in the background. Interested, because they didn't suck, and I caught a glimpse of a gig poster (i love me some gig posters) and jotted down the name. Turns out, this is not the band that was gracing that stage, but it was still a valued purchase nonetheless.

Their 2008 release slotted at number 43 on my best albums of the decade list, and if written again, this first track would be in the top 20 of my best songs of all time list.. So, that says something. I have included two songs from that release, one is just a slide show video, which I hate to use, but its all there is. The other is a "music video" and I use that term very loosely.

Again, this is a band that has very little exposure in the US that I know of, so it is hard to find anything. When a band doesn't even have a wiki page.....

Song of the Day: "Ghost/Beams of Light" (live from the Madrigals DVD) by Howie Day

>> Sunday, May 16, 2010

Simply put, the most musically amazing video I have ever seen.
Simply put, one of the best live shows I have ever been too.

I have seen what this guy can do in concert, and this is just the tip of the berg. This video is a little long, but just watch it. What he does with one guitar and some loops, is more than most bands can do.

Again, he is ALONE on this stage, but if you close your eye, you hear an 8 piece band behind him.

Song of the Day: "Little Lion Man" by Mumford and Sons

>> Saturday, May 15, 2010

Definite candidate for the best albums, and best songs of the year lists. There is something uniquely refreshing about this bands Everyman voice. The music is a little honkeytonk, but in an ironically cool kinda way. I hope you enjoy. Keep an eye out for this band.

"Little Lion Man" by Mumford and Sons

Band of the Week: Yeasayer

>> Friday, May 14, 2010

This, is a strange fucking band, and yet, I cannot stop listening to them.
They incorrectly and arrogantly describe their sound "Middle Eastern-psych-snap-gospel." And I'm sure they just said that to confuse the dimwitted reporter that was interviewing them.
I cannot explain myself what they sound like. And I'm sure that if I surveyed all the people the visited this exact blog post, only about 30% of the readers would actually like the 4 videos here. As is with all innovative music, its not for everyone, but those who reach for those new corners of sound, will love it.

Below you will find 4 clips and 5 songs. The first two are music videos from their fantastic 2010 release.

The third is a Take Away Show, which is one of my favorite blogs. It's a french website that jams bands into subways and random livingrooms and gets them to sing their hearts out. As they did with this lovely band. With this video, the intro is a bit long winded, but the songs are amazing. I hope you realize, he is playing percussion with a beer bottle and a handful of house keys.

The fourth is a live studio session from current.tv. Great track and better live than I expected.

Easily one of the best songs you have never listened to. It's a sad song, that now brings me negative connotations. But, I cannot help but love this song, even if it has a bitter tinge to it now.

Song of the Day: "All of Everything, Erased" by Kevin Devine

>> Wednesday, May 12, 2010

So, everynowandthen, i let one get by me. And i feel like a noob because of it. This is an album from 2009 that i had no excuse not to discover. I am beating myself up for it, and its painful. Anyways, i would like you to meet Kevin Devine. He released a record called "Brother's Blood" last year, and its genuine and special. This a my favorite track off it. Live and acoustic in an alley in London.

Baker's Dozen: Best Dramatic TV Shows

>> Friday, May 7, 2010

I hate reality television. Reality television is lazy. Don't get me wrong, I am hopelessly addicted to it. But I am starting to really REALLY miss those hour long drama's that used to rule the airwaves. Those shows that could actually bring you to tears. I miss the stories. I miss the well developed characters and the twists and turns. I miss the risks writers take when the idea river runs dry. I miss those episodes that make you actually care about the actors like they are the living embodiment of the character they are portraying. I LOVE real television. Where the creative spark lives for 60 mins and begs you to tune back in next week.

Below you will see my list of UNLAZY TV. The best drama's of recent memory. This is not my fathers list, so you will not find MASH or NYPD Blue, anything black and white, anything "Western", or basically anything from the 80's or earlier. In fact, the oldest show on here, debuted in 1988, and it was one of the ones I was the most weary about including, but not for the reason you are assuming, but I'll get into that in a bit.
Also, you will see some standards that I do not have on here. No Law & Orders of anykind, because, well I don't like them. No CSI's, because David Caruso's tilted head made me hate the entire franchise, and no Sopranos, because, I never watched them.

Included you will see some of my favorite moments from each show, as I can find them that is.

Song of the Day: "Hold It Now, Hit It" by The Beastie Boys

>> Thursday, May 6, 2010

I was looking through my music collection, and noticed a complete lack of something very very important. Too little of The Beastie Boys. So, i remedied that and repurchased one of my all time, long lost, records. Licence to Ill. Below, you will not see my favorite track, but third favorite. However it was the only video from the record I can find.

"Hold It Now, Hit It" by The Beastie Boys

Band of the Week: Cold War Kids

>> Wednesday, May 5, 2010

Although, their most recent album falls very short of par, this is still one of my favorite bands right now. And its a band that does not nearly get its due. You will notice that their 2006 release Robbers & Cowards cemented itself into my best albums of the decade at a solid number 27. And, if I were to rewrite the list 5 years from now, I can almost guarantee that it would not drop a notch, in fact, I would not be shocked if it climbed. This is still the record I turn to when I want to jam out a bit, or when I feel angsty.

Below you will see 4 videos.
"We Used to Vacation" and "Hospital Beds" from an amazing acoustic session that really allows you to experience his unique voice and delivery, both from Robbers & Cowards.

1 interesting music video from the aforementioned album, "Hang Me Up To Dry," that fills in the gaps from what is missing acoustically.

1 music video, "Something Is Not Right With Me" from their most recent release Loyalty to Loyalty.

"We Used To Vacation" (My Personal Favorite Song, both acoustically, and as it is on the album.)

"Hospital Beds" (Such good lyrics)

"Hang Me Up To Dry"

Song of the Day: Pixies "Where is My Mind?"

>> Tuesday, May 4, 2010

Sometimes when you're having a crappy day the only thing to turn it around is listening to some music that is just as intense as your mood. Some people turn to blues. Some to Gwar-esque metal. I turn to the Pixies. By the way, the video I included is not a Pixies video but a vid made by two random dudes- I love it though- I couldn't look away (Love that dog).
